RALEIGH-DURHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PARKING STRUCTURE

Raleigh-Durham, NC

This monumental parking structure features two giant cones at each end, with a central atrium that connects to the terminal. Cool sources illuminate the Teflon fabric of the architectonic forms, setting them off from the warm source of the parking ramps and dramatizing their composition. By day the Teflon fabric of the atrium’s vaulted canopy screens out 80% of the daylight. At night, the fabric becomes a reflector for metal halide uplights that provide a soft, welcoming ambient light.

Decorative pendants with warm compact fluorescents add sparkle to the transparent stairwells, and their warm color contrasts with the atrium ceiling and cool metal halide source floodlighting the outside of the structure. The use of the contrasting colors and different lighting effects benefits passengers’ way finding, and dramatizes the composition of the forms.
