THE HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE – JANELIA RESEARCH CAMPUS

Ashburn, VA

CBB provided comprehensive interior and exterior lighting design for the redevelopment of a major research campus for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The work transformed an existing 1930’s structure into a modern scientific laboratory complex.

The 400,000 square foot complex includes research space; support spaces; vivarium and laboratories; conference, meeting, and administration areas; other teaching and support spaces; and food service areas. The campus also includes a 9,000 sq. ft. conference facility and recreation center with associated conference housing units – 120 rooms and 48 townhouse apartments.

The lighting design scope of work also included an enclosed, 320-vehicle parking area and extensive exterior lighting for all of the site’s roads, paths and walkways, and landscape features.
