ST. KATHARINE DREXEL CHAPEL, XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA
New Orleans, Louisiana
The design for Xavier University’s St. Katharine Drexel Chapel is uniquely modern. The lighting of this LEED Gold building forsakes traditional approaches to church illumination in favor of more contemporary solutions.
Because of the desire for an ample use of daylight, the design process began with daylighting studies, which influenced the architectural design. For the most part, all electric fixtures are recessed and/or integrated into the architecture for a minimalist approach. However, there was no compromise made on the qualities of light; rather a flexible lighting scheme was created that can be expansive and celebratory, as well as intimate and meditative.
