Marty Salzberg, speaker and presenter at Lightfair and Innovation Awards

May, 2011

Setting the standard

2011 is sure to be a very busy year for Marty Salzberg. The CBB Senior Associate will hold leading roles in two events at Lightfair 2011. Marty will be a presenter at the Innovation Awards, the celebrated kick-off for Lightfair’s yearly trade show. The Awards program previews and evaluates the lighting industry’s newest products.

Also on Marty’s schedule at Lightfair is her role as a moderator for the Lightfair Institute workshop, “Alphabet Soup – Making Sense of the Latest Energy Standards.” In this three-hour session, a panel of recognized experts will join her in examining recent developments in the interpretation and application of the various energy codes, and in exploring ideas for the next generation of standards.

Finally, Marty is pleased to announce her recent nomination as an IALD representative on the ASHRAE 90.1 Full Project Committee, a logical progression following her two years of service on this group’s Lighting Sub-committee.

Francesca Bettridge keynote speaker at Expo Lighting America (ELA) 2011

April, 2011

Starring at ELA 2011, Mexico City …

CBB Principal Francesca Bettridge was featured as the keynote speaker at the Expo Lighting America (ELA) 2011 Conference in February. Held at Mexico City’s Banamex Center, the event marked the first conference in Latin America to be dedicated solely to the lighting profession. ELA hosted lighting industry design and manufacturing professionals, as speakers at the symposium.

Francesca’s presentation, entitled “The Lighting Designer’s Importance in Architectural Projects,” explored current trends in architectural lighting, the lighting designer’s significance within project design teams, and the critical role of lighting design in successful project outcomes. Case studies of four key CBB projects provided relevant examples of this theme. Francesca has already been asked to speak again at next year’s ELA Conference.

Green lighting: CBB at the forefront

CBBLD Principal Stephen Bernstein was the organizer and moderator of a workshop entitled “Lighting: What's Here & What's Next?” at the BuildingsNY/GreenBuildingsNY Conference 2011, held at the Jacob K. Javits Center at the end of March.

In this session, Stephen led a panel of lighting industry experts, who provided attendees with:

  • an up-to-date overview of current lamp and source technologies, including LEDs, induction lighting, daylighting, and lighting control systems
  • a discussion of the pros and cons associated with each of these new technologies, including their contributions to green building
  • the impact of daylighting strategies on the design of today’s buildings
  • upcoming developments in, and the future direction of, the lighting industry

The workshop also included a case study of a recent project, to illustrate the use of new lighting sources in a time of restrictive power usage requirements.

Bar Basque project is featured in Hospitality Design magazine

January-February 2011

Bar Basque: life imitates art

Bar Basque – a recent CBB project in collaboration with Philip Koether Architects – is featured in the January-February 2011 issue of Hospitality Design magazine. The concept for this venue is the brainchild of Syd Mead, a famed "visual futurist" and art director of science fiction-themed films (Blade Runner). The rich, elegant appeal of the venue itself is achieved through the design team’s translation of Mead's renderings into a real-life restaurant and bar.

To soften the intense color selected to embody the “robustness” of the Basque region, the lighting designers proposed that the curved red walls be translucent, and lit to glow from within. White LED sources and the drama of accent lighting balance the composition. A punched black band with blue LED backlighting – reminiscent of spaceship controls – underscores the restaurant’s futuristic theme. Using a vocabulary of only three sources, applied in imaginative ways and carefully detailed into the complex architecture, CBB’s compelling approach to its lighting definitively enhances Bar Basque’s visually striking yet comfortable ambience. Central Harlem Health Clinic Project

January, 2011

A bright example for today’s healthcare

CBB was one of only a handful of firms selected for inclusion in the Lighting Journal (a quarterly publication of the UK’s Institution of Lighting Professionals) report on new trends in lighting for healthcare facilities. The article recognizes CBB’s design contribution to New York’s Central Harlem STD Clinic (a project in collaboration with Stephen Yablon Architects) as a leading example of the latest approach to healthcare lighting. The project is profiled in a section of the report focusing on urban health centers whose lighting is warm, welcoming and appealing despite extremely tight construction budgets.

The report leaves readers with a clear message: inspired lighting design is fundamental to spaces that nurture the spirit as well as heal the body, characterizing the essence of truly modern healthcare. Read the Lighting Journal report on lighting for healthcare facilities.

Acknowledgement is given to Lighting Journal, to Carl Gardner (Editor), and to the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) for the publication of the article mentioned above.
